Advanced Practice Reflective Supervision Training | Navigating the Complexities of Providing Reflective Supervision or Consultation: A Vignette-Based Training for Current RSC Providers (29 May 2026)

Reflective supervision or consultation is powerful work—and it's full of dilemmas. What do you do when a supervisee keeps canceling but insists everything is fine? How do you navigate your own strong emotional reactions during a session? When do you lean in, and when do you step back?

This interactive, virtual training brings reflective supervision and consultation providers together to explore these real-world challenges in a space that's engaging, conversational, and grounded in collective wisdom. Rather than sitting through lectures, you'll work alongside experienced reflective facilitators to unpack authentic scenarios, share your thinking, and learn from one another's perspectives and experiences.

What You'll Experience:

We'll explore two carefully crafted vignettes that capture common dilemmas in RSC practice. For each vignette, you'll have time to reflect individually, then dive into small group conversations each facilitated by one of our Endorsed reflective consultants. These aren't experts with all the answers—they're seasoned colleagues who will share their thinking while drawing out yours, helping the group discover insights together.

After each small group exploration, we'll come back together to harvest what emerged—the patterns, the tensions, the different approaches, and the questions that matter. You'll leave with new insights, concrete strategies to try, and a deeper understanding of how other practitioners navigate the same challenges you face.

Who Should Attend:

This training is designed for reflective supervision and consultation providers across experience levels. Whether you're newer to this work or a seasoned practitioner, you'll benefit from wrestling with real dilemmas alongside colleagues and learning from diverse perspectives.

What Makes This Different:

This isn't a training where you sit back and absorb information. You'll stay in the same small group throughout the session, building trust and going deeper with each conversation. Facilitators join as co-learners, sharing their wisdom while genuinely exploring the complexity with you. And because we're capping enrollment, we want to ensure that every voice matters and can be heard.

You'll leave this session with new insights, practical approaches, and the reassurance that the dilemmas you face in your work are shared by others—and that together, we can navigate them with more skill, confidence, and care.

Training Facilitator(s)

Training facilitator Jess Taylor-Pickford, LCSW, IMH-E®is NCIMHA’s Program Director of Reflective Supervision/Consultation. In additional to planning and implementing NCIMHA’s RSC programming, Jess has facilitated RSC spaces for groups and individuals across a variety of disciplines and settings for over a decade.

Breakout discussions will be facilitated by the following reflective supervisors and consultants:

Cheri Coleman, MSW, IMH-E® has provided reflective supervision and consultation to home visiting professionals from varied disciplines for over a decade, supporting practitioners in deepening their reflective practice and navigating the relational complexities of work with young children and families.

Sara Kiehn, M.Ed, IMH-E® works in the Zero to Three HealthySteps program funded through the Children’s Home Society of NC. She educates families about early relational health and supports professionals across all domains by providing in person/virtual and group/individual RSC, offering state and national presentations, and training. Sara believes that relationships are at the core of all that we do and delights when seeing the parallel process unfold in her relationships.

Jodi Whiteman, M.Ed, CEIM, IMH-E® is the Senior Director of Partnerships at LENA and an endorsed Infant Mental Health Mentor (Policy) and reflective supervisor with over 25 years of experience in infant and early childhood mental health and early childhood systems. She has held leadership roles with ZERO TO THREE and Public Consulting Group and focuses on strengthening the early childhood workforce through reflective practice and relationship-based supports.

Susanne Walker Wilson, LCSW, LCAS, ITFS, IMH-E® facilitates RSC groups locally, statewide, and internationally and offers RSC individually too. She’s a trainer of RSC for NCIMHA. Her favorite moments in RSC are when supervisees utilize reflection to make sense out of something they either haven’t noticed or couldn’t make sense of before – light bulb moments of self-awareness and insight into themselves, the families and community partners they support, and the parallel process.

The North Carolina Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Association (NCIMHA) recognizes that the infant and early childhood workforce thrives when given opportunities to reflect on their work. Reflective supervision/consultation (RSC) provides a vital space for professionals to process their experiences, deepen their skills, and reduce work-related stress that can lead to burnout. Growing evidence supports that RSC enhances professional capacity, encourages self-awareness, and promotes overall workforce well-being.

In response to the growing demand for qualified RSC providers, NCIMHA is proud to host the 2025–2026 Reflective Supervision/Consultation Learning Collaborative. This initiative is designed to support North Carolina professionals in building their skills and capacity to offer reflective supervision or consultation within their organizations and roles.

Participants will attend six training sessions (22 hours total), focusing on key topics such as building new relationships, reflective frameworks, understanding power dynamics, self-awareness, navigating rupture and repair, transitions, and goodbyes. In addition, participants will engage in virtual group reflective consultation monthly.

October 16-17, 2025 | Two full in-person training days at the Museum of Life and Science, Durham, NC
April 16-17, 2026 | Two half-day virtual trainings (9:00 AM–12:00 PM via Zoom)
September 10-11, 2026 | Two half-day virtual trainings (9:00 AM–12:00 PM via Zoom)

Group Reflective Supervision / Consultation

In addition to training, participants will receive 24 hours of virtual group RSC over 12 months (2 hours per month). Meeting times will be coordinated between RSC consultants and group participants to ensure consistent scheduling.

Hand in Hand for Infant and Maternal Mental Health

The North Carolina Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Association (NCIMHA) is a statewide, interdisciplinary, non-profit organization established to promote mental health for children birth through age 5 and expectant parents by collaborating to strengthen early childhood systems and developing an effective and supported workforce.

The 2026 NCIMHA Annual Conference will convene professionals from all over North Carolina to connect, reconnect, and build meaningful relationships across sectors and systems, with a goal to strengthen and prepare the multiple workforces who support the needs and dreams of all of North Carolina’s children under 6, their families, and expectant families.

This event is ideal for folks who work with young children and families, early care & education, early intervention, healthcare, home visitors, parent education and family support, social work, psychology, early childhood policy makers, advocacy and many others.

The two-day conference will be held in-person on Thursday, October 8, 2026 and Friday, October 9, 2026 at Cape Fear Community College
